Manchester Boad Board.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the above was held at their office, Feilding, on Satnrday afternoon last. Present— Messrs F. T. Lethbridge (chairman), G. Wheeler, J, PurkißS, H J Booth, W. G. Pearce The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Correspondence was received and dealt with as follows : — From Treasury remitting subsidies of £85 7s 6d and £84 Us 2d due to Board . From Treasury, remitting _51130 amount of loan for construction of roads and bridging Makino stream in No 4 subdivision. Also £1000, portion of loan for the construction of roads in No 3 sub division. " From W. Proposed by Mr Wheeler, seconded by Mr Purkiss, That public notice be given that on and after September' 17th, all wheel traffic on the Waituna road will be temporarily stopped by ' this Board, under section 90 of the | Public Works Act, 1882, while the , said road is being constructed and 1 metalled. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Wheeler, seconded by Mr Booth, That the Clerk bet instructed to sue for outstanding rates. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Pearce, seconded l by Mr Purkiss, That the Engineer have the road repaired in front of Mr , Shepherd's, Watershed road, Hiwinui. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Wheeler, seconded 1 by Mr Lethbridge, That the Clerk reply to the Rangitikei County Council and point out that clause 248 of the Counties Act, referred to by them, does not render it imperative to under-. take costly additions to the Onepuhi* bridge. It first confers upon them the i power, and secondly states that the Governor may, not shall order the same. Also, That the Clerk remind them that some four years .ago the traffic was kept open by a temporary. structure for about twelve months, ana* that the Board still thinks the .interests of this district will be best served i by allowing the present repairs to suffice for even a longer period.-—Car-. ried. 1 Proposed by Mr Wheeler, seconded . by Mr Lethbridge, That the Waituna contract, No. 1, be given to A. Managh ; No. 2, to Speed and Mac* farlane , for McCrea's road, Nosj 1 aud 2, to Behrent and Strawbridge ; No. 3, L. Clapham ; Makino road, to W. Allan.— Carried. Proposed by Mr Purkiss, seconded by Mr Booth, That the Bangitikei County Council be asked to postpone any farther expenditure on tlie 'onepubi bridge, otherwise than actual cost of repairs necessary to keep the bridge open for traffic, until a meeting of the various local bodies interested in. tbe cost of same has been held to discuss the amount to be expended as thia Board is not satisfied that the proposed expenditure will be of a permanent nature. — Carried. Notice of motion was given by Mr Wheeler, That in the event of tbe proposed expensive alterations to the Onepuhi bridge being persisted in this Board take the necessary steps under section 105 of the Public Works Act,, to have a toll gate erected and such toll levied as will provide interest oh the annual expenses chargeable against the district situated between the' Rangitikei and Pohangina rivers. Proposed by Mr Lethbridge, seconded by Mr Pearce, that £250 a year ~ be offered Mr Bray as clerk, returning officer, collector, engineer, and slaugh-ter-house inspector to the Board y and he to bank the tolls. Mr. Bray tofind offices for the Board, fer^which the Board will allow 8s a week!. Five. per cent on loan work estra, and £6.0 [extra be offered Mr Bray to act as valuer to the Board. The appointment to commence from September Ist, — Carried. Accounts were passed for payment and the Board adjourned.
