Agricultural Items.

o There are nearly forty co-operatiye I dairies at work in Ireland, and sev- 1 eral more in process of formation. | The output tor last year exceeded £150,000. \ It has been repeatedly stated that English butchers and dealers are in the habit ot selling Australian beef and mutton as English, and receiving for it the p-ice usually com xnanded by the best quality of home grown meat. This at all events cannot be said of Messrs. Kolland, Barret, and Layng, of Newmarket, England. In the Newmarket Journal the firm announces : — " Don't forget the New Zealand beef and mutton. Splendid beet (all prime joints), 7d per lb ; other joints, 4^d, s£d, 6£, ; shoulders of the choicest mutton, 6d ; legs and loins of the choicest mutton, 6_d ; other joints, 4d and s£d. Try a joint and convince yourself of its superior quality." So far as it concerns Australia, the horse trade with India is a very important one. It appears tbat last year the presidency of Madras imported upwards of 1000 horses, valued at £19,801, almost wholly from Melbourne. This season upwards of 3000 have been shipped from Australia to India, four-fifths of which were dispatched from Melbourne. Speaking to a Melbourne dealer this gentleman appeared very much disturbed about the Victorian border stock tax. •* This horse traffic for India, " he said, " is worth at least half a million sterling to Victoria every year in freight, feed, wages, purchases, etc. ; and it will serve the colony right to lose it, for lose it it will unless this preposterous bar to trade is removed at once."
