A meeting to consider a scheme for tho formation of a canal fr^m Sumner to Christchurch held to day, was attooded by abont fifty prominent citizens, and the Mayor presided. An pstima'.o was submitted as follows : — Land additional to present canal rosorve, £-24, 750 ; entrance at Sumner ' training wall fite £60,000, excavation by 8-reom dredge from through Estuary to canal reserve, 2-J ' miles, £37,180 ; two miles of canal ', from Ks'uary to dock at Chtistchurch £29,7-14 ; turning and passing place [ at Htathcote, £17,466; quny space at Neatheote, £20,000; dock at j Christchurch 105 acres excavation, 1 £.'32.662 ; uecesaary linial yards of ' quay space, £-2 11,200; preliminary surveys, etc., £4500 Total, £487,482. , After some discussion a committee was appointed to consi.ier the matter und report to another meeting.
