Judge Kettle.

When the Justice Estimates were before the House on Tuesday, Mr Willis strongly urged that the •alary of District Judge Kettle should; be increased. He is, he said, a greaUy overworked man, a man of exceptional ability, and has a Very large district to attend to. He knew that Judge Kettle would be compelled to resign if the Government did not raise his salary. Mr George Hutchison also maintained that the salary of Mr Kettle and that of the other District Judges should be increased. Mr Stereos spoke in high praise of the abilities of Judge Kettle, and so did Dr Newman. The Premier said that the Government had made two offers to Judge Kettle, but he had refused them. Mr Willis : What were the offers ? The Premier replied that he had been offered the Validation Court. Mr G. Hutchison said that that would have meant breaking up his home. The Premier added that there would probably be ere long other changes, and that it was the desire of the Government to do what was just to a deserving officer. Mr Pirani and Mr MoGuire hoped that Judge Kettle would not lie removed from his present district; The former said he was one of the -best Bankruptcy Judges in the Colony. MrCadman said there were plenty of Magistrates who had much rougher trips to make than Judge Kettle. It must be understood that he had nothing to say against him, for he was a very efficient officer. — Times*
