LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL.

|Per Press Association]. 1 Wellington, August 21. The Council met at 2.30. The Hon. Sir Patrick Buckley, replying to Mr Kerr, said it was not the intention of Government to bring in a Bill to appoint examiners and auditors to audit the accounts of the Equitable Insurance Company because the shareholders had sufficient power at present to punish the directors if they had transgressed. The Hon. Mr Stevens moved that it be a Tecommendation to Government to include in any Bill to amend the Muuicipal Corporation Act a provision by which no signature other than t^ose of ratepayers should be admitted to any petitions under the Municipal Corporation Act, 1886. The motion was agreed to. The Council decided not to insist upon the amendment in the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Bill to which the other Chamber took excep tion. The Harbour Act Amendment Bill was tead a second time, and the Council then adjourned. HOUSE OF REPRESENTA TIVES
