Norton and probably Pumau, will, it is said, be shipped to Melbourne shortly to join the rest of Mr Gollan'a team of horses at Cauln'eld. Carnage is first favorite for the Melbourne Cup at 20 to 1. I (Gipsy King) am informed that Mr K. Boss, of Wanganui, who re cently -went to Melbourne for the purpose of selecting a stallion to take Natafcor's place this season, has purchased Megaphone (by New bold — •Sound). He is a light bay in color, standing about 15.3, and compactly built. As a colt Megaphone was unlucky one or two occasions in having to meet Onrbine, but nevertheless proved himself a great racehorse. Maxim, whose death is announced by American papers to hand, was bred by the late Auckland Stud Company in 1884, and was sired by Musket, dam Realisation. As a two-year-old he ran the great Abercorn to s head in the Ascot Yale Stakes, and won all the events he started for in New Zealand in his three-year-old career — Hawke's Bay Guineas and Spring Handicap, Canterbury Derby and Cup. Owing to Maxim striking himself while galloping, he could not be trained after 1887, and was subsequently sold by Mr G. G. Stead to Mr J. B. Haggin, of California, for close on L3OOO, for stud purposes. Maxim left several of his; progeny in New Zealand, the best of whom last season was Bluefire, who topped the list of amounts won by horses during the year.
