LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL. (PEB PBBSS ASSOCIATION.) WELLINGTON, August 17. The Council met at 2.30 p.m. The Adulteration Prevention Bill was recommitted. Mr Bowen moved the second reading of the Middle Districts ; of New Zealand University College Bill, which provides the michinery for starting nn affiliated College in Wei- j lingtou. The motion was agreed to j after severe opposition on the part of j the Hons. Shrimski and Kelly. ! The Hon. Mr Montgomery moved I the second reading of the Companies j Accounts Audit Bill, which provides I that a majority of the shareholders of ) public companies may ask for an audit by the Auditor General's Department. The Hon. Mr Stevens objected to j the measure as not being calculated to protect shareholders, who should themselves take greater interest in their affairs. The Hon. Mr Pharazyn pointed out that if State audits were allowed Governu-ent thereby would be guaranteeing the soundness of the company. The Hons. Oliver and ShrimsUi supported the Bill, and the Hon. Mr Bowen expresssed the ft ar that the Bill would not have the effect of protecting shareholders. The Bill was read a second time. The Council then adjourned.
