FURTHER PARTICULARS.
As we announced in yesterday's issue a tragedy occurred on the Merrivale diggings, near Otautau, last Sunday afternoon. A miner named Frederick Hooker shot a man named Reynolds dead, and then committed suicide. Subsequent to shooting the father he fired at a boy, son of Reynolds, but missed him, and then fired at Miss Reynolds, aged 18, shattering her right forearm and blowing hor left thumb off. Several pellets also lodged in her breast. Mrs Reynolds is missing, and is either shot or lost in the bush Hookor was found dead in bis hut about a mile from Reynold's place. Reynolds was shot through the temple. Jealousy is the supposed cause of the tragedy. Miss Reynolds has been taken to the Riverton Hospital. The police are searching for Mrs Reynolds. Invebcargill, August 13. Mrs Reynolds has arrived safely at Merrivale Station, This morning Hooker threatened to shoot her, but she managed to elude him in the bush, and armed at the Merrivale Station this morning. The scene of the tragedy being an isolated place, the cause for Hooker's murderous acts are unknown yet. It is said that he had boarded with Reynolds.
