Milk Fever in Cows.

o The following may be valuable information to dairymen who may have the misfortune to have cows in their possession subject to milk fever, and in many cases the disease has proved fatal- One of our pioneer settlers informs me that he has succeeded in staying the fever. For over a period of five years he says a cow in his possession has been subject to this fever at each time of calving. The animal was subsequently given up for dead, the fever lasting iron eight to ten days, and all this time the poor creature was suffering intense pain. The owner has from carefnl study claimed the following to be a sure preventative and cure for milk fever : — Before calving (three days) dissolve from £lb to lib of Epsom salts into abcut five pints of warm water, to be given in one dose. Constantly watch her up to time or calving Immediately the calf is dropped sprinkle about a handful of fine salt on it at intervals, amounting to 1^ lbs in all. By so doing the cow licks the salt from her calf unnoticed. After this is accomplished stand a large vessel full of uald spring water (well water will do) close to the animal that she may drink a portion, if not all. at her leisure ; repeat the supply of water as often as possible, the more she drinks the sooner the fever leaves her. Acting on these instructions the foregoing will, if attended to in time, prove a sure preventive in all such cases as the above. I am directed to say both cow and calf are doing well, no sijiii whatever of the fever making its appearance. — Exchange.
