HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.

The House resumed at 7.30. Mr Geo. Hutchison, who resumed the financial debate, was strongly in favor of the proposal to devote £250,---000 for land for settlement, and said he would be willing to vote for even a larger sum for the purpose. He approved of the recent banking legislation, and believed that before the end of the time for which the guarantee was given tbe colony would be entirely relieved of its liability. lie was strongly opposed to the consols scheme, but suggested that cheap money should be raised from three leading institutions of th» colony, Post Office, Government Life Insurance, and the Public Trust Office. He strongly condemned the leadership of the Premier. The Hon. Reeves twitted Mr Hutchison with inconsistency, and said his remarks about the Premier came with ill grace. He asserted the Libe ra) party, during its tenure of office, had seen New Zealand stock at a higher price than it had ever reached before, and they had seen the credit of the colony rise higher than at any time whilst the colony was ruled by the business principles of the Conservative party. The present Government had restored confidence in the colony at Home, and for that reason they would be able to go on the London market and get money cheaply. The Liberal party were opposed to borrowing, but there was great difference between the present proposals and the bad old borrowing of former times. Mr Mackenzie (Clutha), in criticising the Government proposals, said the Minister for Labor had legislated to such extent that it was almost impossible now to get employment in the colony at all. The House rose at 1.45 a.m.
