Victorian Railway Retrenchment
— «- 750 SERVANTS TO BE DISCHARGED. (MB PRESS ASSOCIATION). Melbourne, August 6. Since the new classification in the railway charges came into force there has been a heavy shortage. The Commißsionerß estimated it would amount to £30,000 for the year, whereas it amounted to £23,500 for the first four weeks. The Minister of Railways now finds he can dispense with 750 employes. The heads of Ihe various branches are opposed to tbi< redaction on the grounds that it will endanger the working of railways. The Minister proposes to retire the men in batches of 50 at a time.
