Funeral of the Late Rev. Wm. Stewart.

■»' • The mortal remains of the late Itev. W. Stewart, who died at Kiwitea on Weduesday last, were, in deference to the expressed wish of the deceased, interred in the Upper Tutaenui Cemetery on Saturday. The funeral left the Presbyterian Church at Marton at about 2.30 o'clock (the body having been conveyed there during the previous evening) as a mark of respect to Mr Stewart, who had been, for more than twelve years, pastor of that congregation. Prior to leaving the Church, a short service was held, the Rev. Mr Doull, of Bulls, delivering a discourse, and the Revs. Ross and Gordon offering up prayer. The former referred in a feeling manner to the late gentleman's work among his congregation — his untiring zeal — while at the same time having to contend with a delicate constitution. It was mainly through Mr Stewart's efforts that a church was established at Upper Tutaenui. Owing to his impaired health, however, he was obliged to relinquish his church duties, and, with his family, removed to Kiwitea, where he resided up to the time of his death, his system generally breaking up during the last few months. A large number of friends from different parts of the district joined in the cortege, following the remains to their last resting place, and paying their last tribute of respect to one who wag so well known and respected throughout the district. The coffin (on which was laid several beautiful wreaths and crosses, composed principally of camellias, violets, and daphne) was borne from the hearse by four elders of the Church, Messrs Nutt, McCrea, Parkinson, and J. Mcßeth. The Rev. D. Gordon read a most impressive burial service.
