Manchester Road Board.
The ordinary monthly meeting of the above Board was held at their office, Feilding, on Saturday afternoon. Present — Messrs F. Y. Lethbridge (chairman), H. J. Booth, J. Purkiss, W. G. Pearce, A. Conway, and Geo. Wheeler. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Messrs J. H. Hankins and R. Lloyd waited on the Board to ask if they would pay a portion of the cost of the re-erection of a bridge across the Stoney Creek on Henderson's road. They suggested that this Board should take over control of the bridge, which is now under control of the Manawatu Road Board, and erect it themselves, calling on the latter body to pay half the cost. Tbey pointed out the urgent necessity of a bridge at this site. The Chairman informed the deputation that this Board was unable to pay the cost out of ordinary revenue, but if the Manawatu Road Board would raise the money by loan this body would pay a portion of the cost. Correspondence was received and dealt with as follows : — From Under-Secretary Lands and Survey Department, informing the Board that the Kiwitea County Coun cil had been authorised to construct a bridge on Cheltenham Cross-road. From C. W. Marshall, asking for ex tent ion of time for completing diversion of Makino Stream at Furlong's road. — Granted for one month, or as long as the Engineer may think fit. From Commissioner of Taxes, re rates. From F. S. Gray, drawing Board's attention to bad state of drain in front of his property, Taonui road. — Engineer instructed to have drain cleared, as requested. From Chairman Rangitikei County Council, re Onepuhi bridge. From Commissioner of Taxes, subsidy of £87 7s 6d due to the Board. From Colonial Treasurer, re gazetting special orders. From W. Rutherford, secretary Manawatu Road Board, asking this Board if they would pay one-half the cost of erection of bridge on Henderson's line. The cost was estimated at £183. From Secretary to Treasury, notifying that loans to the Board were now available. From H. J. Hayns, secretary Pohangina Road Board, asking if the chairman Manchester Road Board would send a letter stating there was no opposition to the Pohangina County Bill. From I>. Crewe, asking the Board to make reduction of toll fee on mob of cattle which he wished to send through the Gorge. [Chairman had no power to make reduction.] From G. C. Hill, Town Clerk, Feild ing Borough Council, giving notice that it was the intention of the Feilding Borough Council to construct a bridge over the Kiwitea stream within the Borough and that it was the inten tion of the Council to ask the Governor for power to construct the bridge and to recover a proportion of the cost as follows :— Manchester Road Board, 312ths, £536 12s '3d; Kiwitea County Council, 3-12tks, £536 12s 3d; Pohungina Road Board, 1-I2th, £178 17s sd; Feilding Borough Council, 5-12ths, £894 7s 2d. The cost of bridge was estimated at £2006 9s Id, and land required for approaches £140. Any objection to the above proposal must be sent to His Ex cellency the Governor within a period of two months from dat (Auguat 4th). Proposed by Mr Booth, seconded by Mr Lethbridge, That the Rating Act 1882, shall bo in force whhin the Manchester Road Board District ; also that all assessments of property within the said district of the Manchester Road Board shall be made under the provisions of sub-section 6 of section 2 of the Rating Acts Amendment Act 1893, according to the rateable value of such property as defined in section 2 of *• the Rating Act, 1882."— Oar. ned. Propose! by Mr Pearce, seconded by Mr Conway, That the Clerk be instructed to wtite to Messrs Aldrich, Currie, Dixon and Snow, giving them notice to keep their pigs from straying on the road* at Bunnythorpe. Also, Nicbol and Fraucisj Spur road. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Purkias, seconded by Mr Wheeler, That tenders be called for all works in Nos 3 and 4 wards under loans. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Purkiss, seconded by Mr Conway, That the District Railway Engineer's attention be called to stoppage of track on railway line near Swainson'a crossing by the alteration' of line, and that this Board requests that the track be made fit for traffic as soon as possible.—Carried. Proposod by Mr Booth, seconded by Mr Lethbridge, That the following special order be made, viz : That it is the intention of the Manchester Road Board (under the provisions of the Loans to Local Bodies Act, 1886, and under and by virtue of a warrant issued under the hand of His Excellency the Governor of New Zealand, dated 2 1 at day of June, 1894, authorising the Kiwitea County Council to construct a bridge over the Kiwitea river on the Cheltenham Cross-road and apportioning the cost of the said bridge) to borrow the sum of £210 for the purpose of providing one-third of the cost of erecting a traffic bridge over the Kiwitea river on the Cheltenham Cross-road, and making the approaches thereto and all other work necessary for the completion of the said bridge in accordance with the above-mentioned warrant, and that a special rate of one two- hundred" and>sixtieth part of a penny in the £ be made upon the rateable value of tho whole of the rateable property (Crown and Native Lands excepted) within the Manchester Road District for the purpose of paying the interest on the above loan of £210 to be borrowed under " The Government Loans to Local Bodies Act, 1886," such rate to be an annual recurring rate for 26 yean and payable in equal instalments at the Board's affice on the first days of April and October in each year—Carried. Proposed by Mr Pearce, seconded by Mr Conway, That the Engineer inspect the bridge across the Mangaone on the Valley road and report at next meeting.— Carried. Proposed by Mr Wheeler, seconded by Mr Booth, That this Board, while

Allan's tend* , be accented for constructing culvert in Hopkirk's creek. • >r S\ The question of paying the Qerir and Engineer a fixed salary in plate of a commission, as at present, Was . discussed at length.
