The War between Japan and China.
WAR OFFICIALLY DECLARED. MORE FIGHTING. (PKB PEKSS ASSOCIATION). Hong Kong, August 1. The Chinese are making preparations for a prolonged war. Li Hung Chang declares that if war was provoked China will fiftht to the bitter end. The Ching Neu, one of the cruisers reported to have been sunk by the Japanese, reached Weihawai in a damaged condition on Sunday. London, July 31 A fight took place between a Chinese ironclad and a Japanese cruiser. Many on bqtl> sides were killed. The cruiser was crippled, but escaped in a waterlogged condition. The owners of the Kawshung, through the British Foreign Oflice, have made a claim for damages against Japan. It is believed the incident will seriously complicate matters. Reports from Shanghai state that Chinese transports, fearing the Japanese fleet, have returned to Cheefoo. Britain and Russia will co-operate to secure peace, and all the Powers are i^oving in the same direction. August 1. The Chinese legation entirely discredits the reported engagement between the Japanese and Chinese warships. The Japanese Government has exppessjed regret to the Premier for the linking of th£ Kawshung, stating their commander was unaware the transports were British vessels. Captain Goldsworthy was saved by the Japanese. Shanghai, August 1. The Japanese are withdrawing their forces troia Spoul in order to renew, the attack on Yachan. It fs reported they have already twice attacked the Chinese position there, but have been repulsed with hjeavy Joss. China has stopped the transmission of messages on the Japanese cable. It is expected here war will be declared to-day, but jit is reported Japan has already taken this step.
