The War between Japan and China.
ANOTHER NAVAL ENGAGEMENT. JAPANESE AGAIN VICTORIOUS. AN IRONCLAD AND TWO CRUIS ERS SUNK. [Per Press Association.] London. July 30 The Daily Telegraph says the Chinese Legation notifies that the sunken transport Kawshung flew the British flag. The Chinese also assert that the vessel was sunk prior to war being declared. During the naval engagement near Round Island three Japanese warships defeated two Chinese. Several transports were severely cut by their fire. The populace of Yokohama are strongly in favour of fighting. The Japanese Treasury is said to be amply provided with funds. Foreigners praise the discipline of the troops. The Chinese Government have ordered 15,000 tons of tinned beef from America. The Japanese officers on three occasions offered to save Captain Goldsbury of the Chinese transport, and stated that they had been ordered to sink the vessel, but the captain declined to surrender his vessel. Japan has refuaed American mediation. Reports from Shanghai state the Japanese sunk the ironclad Chenluyen and two cruisers on Monday last after a hot fight. AH able bodied Chinamen are debarred from leaving the Empire. The directors of the city of Melbourne Bank have resigned owing to the dismissal of Mr Rousse, manager.
