A deputation, representing pawnbrokers of the colony, waited on the Premier to-day, and pointed out that the reduced rate of interest, as contained in the Pawnbrokers' Act Amendment Bill, now before the Council, was such as to preTent them earning a living. The Hca Mr Seddon asked the deputation to put their views in writing. This Day. Government have decided to offer for sale three steamers — Hinemoa, Stella, and Teranora — and to either purchase, or have built, one large steamer suitable for cable repairing and lighthouse work. It is probable the offer of £1500 received for the Stella will be accepted. CHBIBTCHCBCH, Julj 23. An elderly married woman named Sarah Davis died suddenly from heart disease at Addington to day. Auckland. July 23. A woman named Parslow was found dead in bed. At the inquest, a verdict of death through heart disease, aggravated by intemperate habits, was returned. Mr Withy's motion at the Parnell Bor* ough Council, to petition Parliament to pass a law this session providing for all the local bodies to levy rates upon the rental value, exclusive of improvements, was defeated to-night by five to four. Dukkdin, July 22. At a meeting of the Manufacturers*' Association to»day to consider the Labor Bi Is, satisfaction was expressed at the withdrawal of the Master and Appren tice Bill, which was considered uncalled for and, as drafted, unworkable.
