SENTENCED TO DEATH. THE SHEARERS' DIFFICULTY. MORE INCENDIARISM. (PEK PBESS ASSOCIATION.) Stdney, July 21. Inquiries have been raade wilh reference to the statement by the St. James Gazette, London, that women were caters of arsenic. So far the result of the en quiry goes in tbe direction of proving tbat the statement has no foundation. Fears are entertained for the aafety of the suamer Dukenfield, from Napier, and tho steamer Phocoe bas beea scut in search of her. It has been snowing continuously for the past six days At Oberon, on the hills west of Sydney, the country is completely covered, and stock is likely to perish for want of food unless a change occurs shortly. This Day. A fine display of the aurora borealis has been visible during the last few evenings. Melboubne, July 22. Jordan, the coloured man who was arrested ou a charge of being concerned in the murder of the woman Hicks, with whom he had been living, has been found guilty and sentenced to death The barque Freetrader has been totally wrecked at Warrnambool, owing to the anchor parting during a heavy gale. The crew reached the shore safely. Brisbane, Tbis Day. Conflicting accouuts are given of the shooting of the shearer named Ashton. Sub-iuspector Carr states that a man named Prior fired the shot which accidentally wounded Ashton. Carr snatched tho revolver from Prior and arrested him. Ashton, seeing tho revolver in Carr's hand, accussed the latter of shooting him. Prior is alleged to havo confessed that he tired the fatal shot. A wool-shed at Radcliffe Station has been burned. There is every indication of incendiarism.
