The Feilding Star. Oroua & Kiwitea Counties Gazette. Published Daily. SATURDAY, JULY 21, 1894. Local and General News.

Major Locketfs house at Wauganui was totally destroyed by fire last night. A quantity of intereßting reading matter ■will be found on the fourth page to-day. We have to acknowledge receipt of a batch of Parliamentary papers, including a copy of the evidence taken at tho famous Fox Correspondence Commission Notice is given by the Commissioner of Crown Lands that Daniel Jones, the selector of section 57, Block VII, Survey district of Apiti, has applied to transfer the same to Messrs McKinnon and Son. Mr C. H. Mills intends proposing an amend meet to the Criminal Code Bill to enable the case of Louis Chemi!«, now lying under life sentence for the Kaiwarra murder, to be brought before the Court of I Appeal. i The Matron of the Palnicrston North Hospital desires to gratefully acknowledge receipt of five volumes by standard authors, and a parcel of illustrated papers from Mr Horace Bastings, of Feilding. The audience at the Assembly Rooms last night, to hear Mr Watson's lecture, was not large, but those present were afforded a treat. Mr F. Y. Lethbridge occupied the chair. Space prevents us giving a detailed report of the lecture. A petition is being circulated amongst residents of Cheltenham, and will be presented to the authorities in due course, praying for the removal of the Post Office from the present building to Mr Evensou's store, opposite the Cheltenham Hotel. The Hawera star states that the weasels threaten to become a serious pest in that district. Of their pertinacity an illustration was afforded the other morning, when one attacked a guinea pig, and though beaten off, came to the attack again and killed it. The weasel in turn was disposed of very quickly. Professor Theodore Lichtwark will give a horse-taming exhibition in the Carbine livery stables this evening. Everyone who has anything to do with horse taming should attend, as much useful instruction may be obtained from the Professor. The Feilding portion of the 'Frisco Mail which arrived by the 4 o'clock train last evening was tho largest which has yet arrived here, consisting of nine bags, weighing about 15001bs. The officials were kept very busy, but the whole mail was sorted in less than two hours, a smart piece of work on their part. The small letter-box at Mr Carthew's corner in the Square is to be replaced by an iron pillar box, such as exist in larger towns. Business people and others will appreciate this, as the former box was altogether insufficient to meet the requirements of townspeople. The new box will be erected in a few days. The householders of Waituna West having failed to elect a School Committee, the Education Board has appointed Messrs Henry, Jolly, and Ezekiel Shannon, commissioners to fulfil the duties of a Committee for the ensuing year. This item of news was omitted from the report of the last meeting of the Board. The^adyertisement postage stamp was gain in evidence at luyercargill th«- --• •tber day, a receipt, purporting to have b en given fora ttansucion in 1890, being put in at he Stipendiary &lagi><rate'> Court, and bearing a stamp with au advertisement on its back As such stamp* lihve only been about 15 months in use, the receipt was impounded by the Tourt. vi..re will probably be hoard of it. The Kimbolton road, leading from Felding to Birmingham, is kept in a better state of repair this season than it was last. There is very heavy traffic on this road, and it costs the Kiwitea County Council a considerable sum of money to keep it in a fit state of repair. This road should be considerably widened, but we presume that the want <»f funds will be the excuse of the local body. At the meeting of the Feilding Debating Society on Monday evening nest the subject for discussion will be " Does ctpital possess undue advantage over nbour in their passed relations " The rtirmtitive will be taken by Mr T. Wats M win f Mr F V Lethbridge will reply vi the negative. Traffic ou this road is considerably impeded on account of this bridge. As the Manchester Road Board and Kiwitea County Council have a say in this matter, perhaps it would be . v.s.-iblc for the Engineers of these said local bodies to see about it. On Tuesday next a deputation cou--iiug of Messrs F. Homer, T. Lowes ami A. Kergusson will proceed to Wcl*<>n, where they will interview ■i -; Pirani and Stevens, M.H.R.'s for .' liiki.su>d and Rangitikei respectively, .i:i.i iho Hon Mr Reeves, with repect to i-.c lattet gentleman's promise, at a ccting of settlers held at Birmingham • ■ .summer, that he would recommend the Government the necessity for repairing Kimbolton road beyond Bimiing.iiii lir T IniHtre gave his final lecture, or . i sni in- in, 'The Schor.l for Scandal," i. It is said the factory will give employment to about 100 persons. As a result of the alteration of the United States tariff, the Wellington Press hears that the American Consulate in Wellington have already had enquiries from wool purchasers over there in regard to the market here. An impression prevails that telegrams lodged at country telephone offices, such as Makiuo, bear an extra charge ; this is an error. Telegrams from any station to any station bear a uniform charge throughout New Zealand.
