The Road from Birmingham to Pemberton and Apiti.
The state of the road beyond Binningi ham leading to the Apiti and Pembercon j districts is at the present time in a most deplorable condition and vehicular traffic is at a dead lock. la fact persons are verj courageous who will attempt to drive through this " slough of despond at the i present time. We have heard of one | hoi so being bogged lately mil when hauled ! out it died. This road was in a very bad I state of repair last season and an agitation i was started to get the Government to take 1 ihe matter in hand seeing that it led to a considerable area of Crown lands and 1 the local body had no funds to do the j work required. The Government did tske j the matter in hand, but too late to do all that) was required, only a portion, of the road having been metalled. The settlers are again agitating for the Government to do something to make the road pass* able and a petition is now being taken around the district and signatures obtained. A deputation will shortly proceed to Wellington to lay the matter before the Minister of Public Works and we trust that their mission will be successful as it is a work which is urgently -required to be done. We have no doubt but that the matter will receive due consideration at the hands of the Government and that prompt measures will be adopted to grant the prayer ,of the petitioners The matter ot opening up of the road leading from Birmingham to Me Beth 'a line will also be brought before the Minister of Public Works at the same time by $he deputation. Ct appears that this road leads through two sections of Government reserves, and as the road is uiade. up to. the said sections on each side the petitioners pray that the • mister of Public Works take this matter also in hand
