■ «■ A parade of the Manchester Rifles was held last evening, 43 members being present. Sergt-Major McMillan took command in the absence of Cap tain Kirton and Lieutenant Bray, and after the corps had been proved presented Vol. W. H. Brooks with a long-service medal, and in doing so stated that he had riiuch pleasure in presenting him with such a token for long and faithful service to his Queen and country knowing that he undoubtedly deserved it, which was received with appreciation from the men. Sergt-Major McMillan then instructed the corps in firing exercises and other drill for about an hour, The ejection for the position of Junior Lieutenant then took place by ballot, Mr J. W. P. Halcombe and ColorSergeant Milson being the candidates for the position, and on the report of the scrutineers, Messrs F. Y. Lethbridge and E. Wilson, resulted in the return of Mr Halcombe by a majority of 14 votes ; Mr Halcombe 28, Color, Sergeant Milson 14. Mr Halcotn.be thanked the men for the honor th,ey had done him in electing him to the position, and stated it would be bis endeavour to do bis best for the corps. Color-Sergeant Milson also thanked those who had voted for him and said that he was not disappointed with hiu defeat, and would do his best as he had done in. his present position for the paat ten years. The remarks of loth candidates were received with applause, when the men were dismissed by the Color-Sergeant.
