LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL.
[PKB PBE9S ASSOCIATION. I Wblmngton, July 19. The Council met at 2.30 p.m. The Hon W. Shrimski resumed the debate on the second reading of the Hon Mr MacGregor'a Divorce Bill. Sir George Whitraore thought the sanctity of home would be destroyed by this class of tinkering legislation He moved as an amendment that the Bill be read a second time that day six months. The Hon. Mr Kerr considered the Bill contained clauses which should not be tolerated in a Christian community. He failed to see why for a mere exhibition of temper a married conple should be separated by law. He objected to divorce being granted because imprisonment for three years was imposed. He would lash a wife beater, but would not prevent papers reporting divorce trials, as he believed the editor of Colonial papers did not abuse their privileges. Sir Patrick Buckley opposed the Bill as he was old-fashioned enough to believe " that those whom God had joined could not be put asunder." The Hons Bolt, Rigg and Scotland, supported the Bill, whilst the Hon Dr Grace opposed it, the latter remarking that during thirty years he had never known a divorced couple who had n<>t regretted the steps they had taken The amendment was lost by 14 to 12, and the Bill read a second time. The Council then adjourned.
