ANARACHISM AND SOCIALISM.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE STAIt. Sin, — I was much amused at Mr Bentley's letter in your issue of yesterday on the above subject. He, like all enthusiasts, jumps to the conclusion that anyone holding different opinions from himself has the worst of the argument ; therefore, Mr Goodbehere has got the worst of it. Mr Bently says, " I have not consulted anyone's dictionary to ascertain a fixed definition of the word 'Socialism,' but I have a definition of my own, and I am bound to say that, on the whole, it is of about the same style of architecture as Mr Stanton's." Unfortunately I did not read what Mr Stanton had to say on the subject, but although Mr Bentley does not favor us with his own definition he gives us an example. He says he unhesitatingly declares Christ lived and died a Socialist ; also, that his teachings were essentially Socialistic. Christ, addressing a great multitude, says, " For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance ; but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away, even that he hath. ' (Matthew XIII, 12). And again, we have the parable of the ten pounds, " For I say unto you, that unto everyone which hath shall be given, and from him that hath not, even that he hath shall be taken away from him " (Luke XIX, 26), and so on. And this is what Mr Bentley considers an essentially Socialistic teaching ! Surely it would have been as well if Mr Bentley had looked up that dictionary after all. I am, etc., Orthodox.
