July 9« Sailed — Alameda, for Auckland. ; A fire occurred to-day in the railway branch of the Colonial Secretary's office, which threatened the destruction of the magnificent building devoted to that department. By some exertion the flames were mastered and the damage confined to a portion of the top floor, but the loss at present cannot be estimated. J . This Day. The damage to the Colonial Secretary's office is now estimated at £10,090. A letter has been received by the Government from Johannesburg, suggesting that considerable benefit would' accrue to the colony, commercially, if it were represented in South Africa,' where the markets offer increasing facilities for the sale of many colonial products. I BBIBBAKR,vJuIy 9. A force of mounted troopers arrested three strikers who are supposed to have been concerned in the recent, burning of ■wool-sheds. The police surrounded the strikers' camp and warned the men that they had been instructed to fire if any resistance was offered.
