ANARCHISM AND SOCIALISM.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE STAR. Sir, Although as your correspondent, Mr Stanton says, Socialism does not countenance "murder, bloodshed, or violence," yet its aim and object is so far identical with Anarchism that its adherents would not hesitate to confiscate the property of those who have obtained their wealth by industry, ability, and perseverance, in order to support the idle, dissolute, incompetent, andignorant classes. The meaning of the word Socialism, as given in Chamber's Etymological Dictionary, is "The name given to schemes for regenerating Society by a more equal distribution of property." The Socialists in fact are fanatics, who are aiming to bring about a millenium, which is an impossibility in the present state of human nature. What development and evolution may bring us to in the course of some millions of years it is impossible to say. Mr Stanton's promised lecture may be interesting in a certain sense, but don't you be flattered by his praise of your "well* written article on Bocks Ahead," or his apology for taking up space in your "valuable columns," which you have no doubt in your own mind ascribed to what may be called by a single word beginning with the letter h and ending with g, I'Qn glaja to, seg that t^e Gerrnaf}. Emperpr js, inyitjng co.qpexaturn by We European, Gpverjiments to, put cjowi Anarchism. It is quite time that some decisive steps shbula be t^lteq with that pbject. t am, etc.., Saml. Gooohkukre. Feildlpg, July eth, 1894.
