KIWITEA COUNTY ROADS.

TO THE ( ';SrAB. Sir,— At the last meeting of the Kiwitea County Council, I noticed that some of the members were agitating for a cross-road to be made over Messrs Buchanan and Levett's run. I Would it not be better, instead of I spending extra money on a road that only a few settlers would ever use, that the money be spent on the main road? For the last seven years there has been a bridge formerly erected over the Kiwitea standing utterly useless, the river flowing round the end of it, and there has been no attempt made to protect or extend the bridge since the approach was first washed away. Since the flood on May 29 th the road for three miles has been impassable. The npproaches to the bridge by the school house have been washed away, and a culvert by my property washed out al together. The ford has had nothing whatever done to it. We have not even a footbridge, and are completely shut in. Now, considering that we pay heavy rates (I myself have just received an account for rates for the amount of £18), I think the set tiers on the upper side of the river are entitled to a little attention in the way of repairs, instead of the money all going to wake a comparatively useless road across Mayfield. One of the settlers bought sheep at the last sale, and had to feed them on the road until the river went down so that he could put a small bridge over the deepest part. I also noticed that there was a special meeting called, immediately after the floods, by the Manchester Road Board to ascertain the damages done, but we had to wait until the usual monthly meeting before any notice was taken of the damage done on this road. There has been money raised for the erection of a bridge at Cheltenham Cross-road, where the settlers can always get out either by the Kiinbolton or the Makino roads, while we are left without any possible way of getting to town in the time- of a flood. "Hoping this letter will be the means of getting some improvements done. I am, etc.| ; R. B. H. Oldbeshaw. Eeiconsfield, July 5, 1894. ■ : \
