WB.certainly approve of " The Gaming and Lotteries Act Amendment Act, 1 .94;'Mntroduced by Sir Patrick Buckley, with the view to prevent cases arising out of horse races being brought into Court. It provides that "no action shall be brought or maintained in any court of law tor recovering any sum of money or valuable thing alleged to be won by way of stakes, or prize, or any event or contingency of or relating to any horse race or other race, fight, game, sport, or exercise." It may be objected that if this became law too much power would be placed in the hands of jockey clubs, and there may be some reason for the objection j but we would urge that, with such responsibilities resting on them, members of jockey clubs would exercise greater discrimination in whom they elected or appointed as officials than they are alleged to have done iv the past, and many of the quicksands and pitfalls which have ensnared them into difficulties leading to legislation would be avoided altogether. No injustice would be allowed to be perpetrated by any local club on either owners, riders, or other persons connected witb genuine horse racing, because appeal could always be made to the metropolitan clubs, the members of which would be quite as likely to give a iust verdict as tbe most alleged intelligent jury panel. We hope the measure will be allowed to oass.
