When tbe grave was being filled m, the natives threw in on the top of the coflin all the old ohief* personal belongings, in accordance with the native custom Clothes, hats, rugs, mats, oarpets, shawls, umbrellas, Ac., were thrown into the grave, and as each succeeding layer of earth was thrown io, it was stamped down by a number of stalwart Maoris.
