Those who were not acquinted with the cause of the sudden stoppage at once raised cries of bombs, and a panic ensued. Stands were overturned and ladies trampled on. The cortege halted, and therefore appeared to confirm the report of an outrage, increasing the terror of the immense crowd. President Carnot was buried between the remains of Victor Hugo and General Rousseau.
