A NEW MILITARY INVENTION.

Julj 1, I St. James Gazette states it is clear tbat the Belgian and German Commercial Treaties most be repealed so thai the Colonial Office had better consider the matter before the colonists made it unpleasantly urgent. The Secretary of State for the Colonies is still urging the, Dutch Government to pay to Captain Carpenter, of the Costa Rica Packet, the sum of £2500 as compensation for illegal arrest, bnt declines to support the claims of the owners and crew of the vessel. The Hon. H. C. Gardner, President of the Board of Agriculture, in reply to a [ deputation, promised to use every means to prevent a fraudulent sale of foreign meat as English standard, and urges that the strongest measures should be taken to rectify the monstrous and widespread deception practiced. It is expected that the wheat crop in the United Kingdom will not exceed seven and a-half million quarters. The Indian crop yielded 82,800,000 qnarters. . The brilliant weather is depressing the • markets. The quarterly revenue returns for tbe United Kingdom show a deficiency of £2,640,000 as compared with the Chancellors's estimate. The Surrey County leads for the cricket championship with seven wins and one loss. Yorkshire follows with five wins and two losses. ~ President Kruger declares that it was only through the visit of Sir Henry Loch to Transvaal that a serious trouble was averted. The Times, referring to affairs in the South African Republic, states that the neglect of the Colonial' Office nearly provoked war between the two races. Washington, July 1 Eighty thousand men have joined the Pullman car strikers. The House has reported on the Tariff Bill which now goes up to the Senate.
