$42000 WORTH OF JEWELLERY STOLEN.

LPKB PRESS ASSOCIATION,] Wellington. June 22. A burglary of a most seusational aud daring character was perpetrated carl}' this evening. Tho premises of the Goldsmith Hall Co., a jewellery firm carrying ou business iu Willis street (opposite the Eveuiug Post office) being entered and upwards of .£2OOO worth of jewellery abstracted. The circumstauces as reported to the police arc that the manager of the Company went to diuuer at 5.40 p.m., locking the door and leaving rive jets of gas burning, and when his assistant returned to the promises at 6.20 p.m. he found the whole place had been ransacked and the windows completely cleared of all cases containing goods of any value. Ou the counter there was also a large number of empty cases, the contents having been abstracted. The manager estimates the loss at over i'2,000, the goods stolen consisting of valuable jeweller}- of every kind. The front door was found to have been opened with a skeleton key, which was found inside on the floor. The burglars had evidently taken all the valuable goods and left paltry articles. A jemmy was found on the counter, but it had not been used, as there was uo necessity for it. The premises arc situated iu one of the busiest parts of city, and at the hour mentioned there must have been a steady stream of people passing. The detective force has the matter in hand, but no arrests have been made yet.
