Floods at Poverty Bay.
[per pbess association j Gisborne, June 20. From Saturday till Tuesday morning, a violent gale, accompanied by heavy rain, was experienced here. The rivers Waimata and Turanganui were flooded, the former being eighteen inches higher than on former occasions. The _ lowlying portion of the town and a considerable area of country is flooded. The river overflowed ita banks, causing the Makauri and surrounding districts to be under -water for a time. The damage, so far as is known, is principally to smaller bridges, culverts, etc., while portions of the roads have been washed away. A few sheep were washed away, but not so many as might have been expected, the farmers having taken the precaution to move them to higher ground. Several families living on the flat were removed for fear of the flood, but no fatalities are reported. The rainfall recorded for the twenty four hours to 9 o'clock on Tuesday morning ■was fourteen and a-half inches. Telegraphic'communication, which has been interrupted for the last two days, was restored to-night.
