June 20 The Cavorsham Licensing Committee to-night refused to grant licenses to the Edinburgh Castle, and Cummer cial hotels in Caversham. At the City Council to-night the Mayor brought up a report on the finances as affected by the result of the recent licens ing meeting. The loss of fees from publicans' and bottle licenses will be £1265 To this has to be added the decrease in the gas supply to hotels, and the probable decrease of water rates, making a total of £1690. To this has to be added the ex pected deficiency in the surplus from the d&a department, owing to money expended in procuring stoves, &c., which will bring up the deficit for the year to £6202. To meet this a sixpenny rate seems inevitable. The Mayor said he had a scheme which might probably obviate this. On his suggestion the matter was referred to the Finance Committee,
