i Speculation as to the Speakership continues rife in Wellington. The public are discussing only two candidates, Sir Maurice O'Rorkeand Major Steward. A Bill is to be submitted to Parliament this session providing for the compulsory maintenance of fire brigades. It is promoted by the United Fire Brigades' Association, but the Ministry will be asked to take it up as a Government measure. If they find they are unable to do this, the measure is to be entrusted to the charge of Mr Pirani. The Bill is to apply to every municipality and town in New Zealand. The revenue necessary is to be contributed in equal thirds by the local governing body, the Insurance Companies, aud the Government. Ranges! Ranges! Ranges!
