DECISION OF INVERCARGILL COMMITTEE. " WAR TO THE KNIFE " BETWEEN PUBLICANS AND BENCH. (per prksb association. ) InVebCargiix, June 18 The Invercargill Licensing Committee to day finally decided not to grant renewals of licenses to the following seven hotels :— Prince of Wales, Union, Stag's Head, Supreme Court, Wilson's, Golden Fleece, aud tho Strathearn. Mr Rattray, solicitor for sereral applicants, asked the Committee to appoint someone of their number to accept the service of writs, as the decisions were likrly to be questioned with a view of having the auth oritios' ruling on the provision of the Act- Mr Wade, solicitor, told the Committee that their decision meant " war to tho knifo ' with the Com mittee, who would find themselves individually affected in business. lie said that the Committee had been guilty of wilful, wanton, deliberate and gross injustice As the Committee retired indications of dissatisfaction came from the body of the Court. Christchurch, June 18 The Christchurch Licensing Com mittee, at its meeting to day, passed a resolution recommending the Government or proper authorities that a periodical inspection and analysis of liquor should take place no less than three timea a year and at any other time which the Inspector may deem desirable. At the meeting of tho Cbri-tchurh Licensing Committee to-day evidence was heard on behalf of the twelve bouses, to which notice of closing, nnd teen given. It was decided to grant licenses to the Tattersall, Caversbam, and Albion, and to close the Golden Fleece, Junction, Victoria, British, White Horse, Brittania, Albert, Gar rick, and Scotch Stores. Largely-signed petitions to the Committee to consider its decision that the univeisal hour of closing should be 1 0 p,m , were put in ; but the Committee declined to make any estsnsion. The Kaiapoi Licensing Committee to-day refused licenses to the Middleton Hotel, Kaiapoi ; Club Hotel, Ran giora ; White Crave Hotel, Woodend ; Oxford Hotel, Oxford.
