Plain and Fancy Dress Ball.
o The juvenile and adult plain and fancy dress ball, held in the Assembly Rooms last night, under the, management of Mr J. Hyde Parker, was a success. There was quite a crowd of spectators present, in addition to a large number of adults, who, after the little ones had gone through their programme, indulged in a iew hours dancing The juveniles, about thirty in number, were almost all in fancy costume, the greater number being pupils of Mr Parker's ; and the capital style in which they went through the various dances, in most instances keeping perfect time, reflects much credit on their tutor. Some choice costumes were worn by the juveniles, and when all were on the floor, happily dancing away, the effect was very pretty. A grand march with various evolutions opened the programme, and the little ones went through it in a creditable manner. The following are the names of the juveniles, with character of fancy costume, viz. : — Misses C. Bilderbeck, " Romp " ; B. Bilderbeck, " Nancy Lee " ; Katie Hamilton, " Fairy " ; Mabel Hamilton, " Queen of Fairies " ; Alberta Valentine, "Railway " ; Ada Handley, " Red, White, and Blue " ; Label Oliver, " Fair Maid of Perth " ; Agnes Smith, "Evening Dress " ; Eva Chamberlain, " Red Riding Hood " ; Katie Brennan, " Flower Girl " ; Masters W. Hamilton, " Little Boy Blue " ; A. Oliver, " Lord Fauntleroy " ; J. Smith, "Sailor" ; J. Brennan, "Jockey"; W. "Naval"; Cyril Dermer, ** Footbailer"; W. Valentine, "Bushranger " ; W. Hastie, "Highlander" ; A. Reade, "Duke"; C. Reade, " Lord " ; Baker, " Jack of Hearts " ; L. Parr, "Highlander," The most handsome costumes among the young ladies were those of the Misses Hamilton, Valentine, and Oliver; Miss \1 abel Hamilton being declared the belle. Masters L. Parr, Oliver, Hamilton, and W. Hastie wore nice costumes, but for downright good dane ing the palm fell to Master Parr, a wee mite of about seven summers, who went through every dance gracefully, and keeping perfect time. So an after ten o'clock after having enjoyed a good supper — under the superintenddence of Mrs Foster— the little ones were dispersed Afterwards a good number of adults graced the floor and dancing was vigorously kept up until the small hours. Amongst the adults who were in fancy costume might be mentioned — Misses Blackmore, " Spanish Tambourine Girl " ; L. Kite, " English Lady " ; Grey, " Waitress " ; Alice Parr, " Lady Footballer "; and E. Wells, " Romp " ; Mr A. L. Parr, " Spanish Toreador " ; Mr I. Watts, " Troubadore " ; and Mr J. Matravers, "Cricketer." Owing to Mr Haybittle's band having a previous engagement Mr Parker was unfortunately unable to secure their services as he intended.
