Feilding Borough Council.
A special meeting of the Feilding Borough Conncil was held last evening to consider the joint report of Messrs J. C. Hill and C. Bray (senr.), engineers, on the Makino stream between Manchester and Warwick streets; also, report of committee appointed to consult Messrs" Hill and Bray as to what terms, thejr 1 would undertake the duties of engineers necessary for the construction of a bridge across the Kiwitea. Present — The Mayor (Mr W. Carthew), Councillors Chamberlain, Sandilands, Lethbridge, Worsfold, Bailey, Fowles, and Gould. The Mayor reported that the committee appointed had interviewed Messrs Hill and Bray re terms on- which they would undertake to prepare plans and ' superintend the construction of a bridge across the Kiwitea stream. Their terms were 5 per cent, on the cost of construction, the borough to pay for inspection while the piles are being driven. ' The . committee . recommended these - terms be adopted. a . Proposed by Cr Fowles, seconded, hy ' Cr Sandilauds, That the offer of Messrs ' Bray and Hill, re engineering the Kiwi* tea bridge works, be accepted. — Carried. . Proposed by Cr SandilandSj seconded by Cr Lethbridge, That the engineers • appointed with respect to the erection - of the Kiwitea bridge and the carrying out of the necessary works in connection - therewith he asked to proceed at once' with the preparation of the plans and specifications.— Carried. The Mayor reported that he and Cr Sandilands bad .interviewed the manager ' of the Bank of Australasia with a view to getting a further overdraft. They were, at the last meeting, when there was an overdraft of £722 19s "3d, £47 under their present limit. -The - manager would allow them to exceed - this amount if councillors would enter - into bonds. With reference to the Warwick street bridge, the Mayor was of opinion that tbe best course was to' leave the span and to proceed with Hie protective works at all hazards. The estimated cost of the protection works was £125. Proposed by Cr Lethbridge, seconded by Cr Sandilands, That the westernapproach of the Warwick street bridge be secured as suggested by Messrs Bray . and Hill in their report and that the Clerk of Works be instructed' to prepare plans and call for tenders for same as soon as possible.— Carried. Cr Lethbridge suggested that large boxes of stones or concrete be put in the Makino stream in place of the crates for * _ protection purposes. He did not think it was any use going on with straighten- . ing the creek and thought this portion of the Engineer's report should be deferred till the rates begin to come in or they would not be able to. meet their bills. • Proposed by Cr Lethbridge, seconded by Cr Worsfoid, That the consideration of the Engineer's report on the straightening of the stream between Warwick street and Manchester street be deferred until next meeting.— -Carried. The Clerk of Works reported that the footbridge across the Makino at Denbigh street had been re-erected ; the North street made passable and the stop bank repaired ; the Kiwitea ford was' almost completed and the metalling would be completed in a few days. .: . - The Mayor thought a foot bridge should be put over the Kiwitea. He would suggest that a pile be driven in the bank of the stream where the old bridge was, and the bridge fastened to this so that when a flood came it would float to one side and hot be washed away. - Also, that a couple of lanterns should be placed at the ford at once. The Clerk of Works was instructed to report on the matter of a footbridge and to have the lanterns put up. This was all the business and the meeting adjourned.
