— : — .,♦. . - — — — . . The monthly meeting of the above Board was held at Feilding yesterday afternoon, instead pf . the previous Saturday. Present -Messrs. Lethbridge (chairman), Wheeler, Purkiss, Booth, Con way, and Pearce. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. ' Correspondence was read and dealt with as follows:— ■ '. | From G. Allerby, roadman, re damage done by flood,— a culvert on the Midland and bridge on Valley roads having beon washed, out. . - , From £. F. Eagar, re muddy state of water table and approach to Post Office at Bunny thorpe, • / From James Lawson, Resident Engineer Railway Department-, a letter to Mr S. Pankhurst, Ashurst, agreeing to contribute £5 towards cleaniag put a creek in Ashurst. — The work is being proceeded with. . ■ From J. Aitken, Ashurst, a telegram stating that a bridge was gone near Hopkirk's, and that the Manawatu Gorge was clear ; also, that the bridge was safe. From W. G. Pearce, Colyton, a telegram received May 30th, re drainage in bis ward caused by flood. From T. Taylor, Blixf, Ashurst, ii floods. '„.'.' From F. S. Gray, asking permission to erect a gate and make art approach from Taonui road to his section. From A. H. Mackay, Engineer Rangitikci County, asking the Engineer of Manchester Road Board to meet him at Onepubi bridge, the approaches to which had been damaged by the recent flood. :.';..; From W. Rutherford, Secretary Palmerston North Hospital, informing the Board that the sum of £211 7s 8d was payable by this Board, but 'they only requested immediate payment pi £108 14s 9d. From G.E. Little, agent for Mr C. Pharazyh, asking the Board to widen drain on Kimbolton road, opposite sections 5 and. 6. ~ . ■ From Clerk Kiwitea County Council r applying for £13 15s, one-third of the cost of the maintenance of Cheltenham Cross road. From J. Lawson, Resident Engineer Railway Department, stating that old rails were sold at 60s per ton for SSSb iron rails, and fish plates and bolts for 2s a pair. From G. H. Espiner, Hon. Secretary Arbor Day Committee, Bnnnythorjpe, asking permission to plant trees on road side. From Gowcr and Grioe, applying for license to slaughter on • section 17, sub> division F. From H. Barnes, Ashurst, asking permission to make small drain opposite his property. ' ; % From C. M. Brooke, Ashburton,. re poisoned wheat. . • . From Treasury, notice that £600, loan for metalling Stanway and McDonald s roads, and construction of Paske'sroad, had been placed to the Board's credit. From Colonial Secretary's. office, re gazetting the £1130 and £1686 loans. From T. J. Smith, re change of name on rate roll. The Engineer's report was read, of which the following is a resume y~ . No 2. Ward.— The Kakariki bridge is high and dry, the creek having cut across the road about a chain on the southern side of the bridge. A ford was recommended. The approaches to the Rangitawa bridge are slightly damaged, but are being repaired. No. 3 Ward.— There is a breach across the Junction, road by the side of culvert about one mile from Stanway road, which is being filled in. No; 4 Ward.— The ford on Mackay 's linewas considerably damaged but has been repaired. . The land sill of the bridge near Mr Fry's gate is undermined. The Engineer recommended that three piles be driven and planked up at the back. No. 5 Ward. — One culvert was washed out on the Valley Itoad, and one on the Midland road. The Engineer recommended that sill bridges be constructed. . The western ap« proach to the Mangaone bridge on Spur road has been washed away and all heavy traffic stopped. He recommended four piles he driven, and the bridge lengthened eighteen feet. The bridge across the Mangaone stream on the Feilding- Ashurst road is washed away and will require a new bridge. -The approaches to the bridge on Reid's line are slightly damaged and he recommended wire crates be laid behind the laud piers* No 6 Ward — The culvert near Mr Hopkirk's on the Palmerston Gorge road is washed away and a breach of 40 feet made, over which a temporary bridge has been placed. A 6 feet concrete culvert was recommended to be put. Messrs Newman and Hanson waited on the Board re McDonald's road, pointing out that eight chains less than was required was being done. The chairman informed them the matter would be attended to. Proposed by Mr Wheeler, seconded by Mr Booth, That a license to slaughter be granted to Messrs Gower andGrice provided they comply with the requirements of the Act.— Carried. ; Proposed by Mir Conway, seconded by Mr Booth, That Mr Henry Barns be permitted tfO cut. a ditch* in front of liis house and garden situated on sections Pohangina road. The ditch not to be more wan one foot from the fence.— Carried. Proposed by Mr Pearce, seconded by Mr Conway, That the name of Mr John Jeffries be placed on the rate roll for sections 170 and 171 Mugby Junction instead of Alfred Greenland Jbat of J. W, Bramwell for part of section 10, sub-H, Manchester Block, instead of T. J. Smith. —Carried. Proposed by Mr Purkiss, seconded by Mr "Wheeler, That the. application of Bunny thorpe Arbor Committee to plant trees on road line be granted subject to. the following conditions ; That all trees planted be deciduous and the site be subject to the approval of the Board's, Engineer.— Carried* , Proposed by Mr Pearoe, seconded by Mr Conway, That Mr John Andrew be allowed the assistance of a man for two | or three days to help him re-erect his suspension foot bridge providing the school children and foot passengers be be allowed to cross until the new bridge is erected. — Carried. With reference to the above the Engineer stated that he would recommend a temporary bridge be erected, the piles and stringers to be of white pine. He considered a bridge of this description could be erected for about £40 or £50 and the planking could be used for the new bridge. A desultory discussion ensued, as to how the money required was to be raised, it being the general opinion that if the Feilding Borough would agree to contribute, the money could be raised under the Public Works Act ancf ensure the erection of the bridge withQpt the expense and delay of a pofi. It wax understood that only a small percentage should be applied for. and that this body would agree to paying a share of the cqst of the Kiwitea bridge within the borough. Proposed by Mr Pearce, seconded by Mr Purkiss, That permission be granted to Mr F. S. Gray to construct approach to his property on the Taonui road, as requested. — Carried. ryjpoaed by Mr Pnrkw*, seconded by Mr Conway, That the Engineer arrange to carry en the metal in McDonald's road as faras Hanson's gate, and that 10 per cent be applied for on the £600 loan, No. : 2 ward, to complete the work scheduled. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Conway, seconded by Mr Booth, That the Wowing special order be confirmed : That the special rate of two-elevenths of a penny in tha £ be made upon the rateable value of the whole of the rateable property (Crown and Native Land 3 occupied by Native owners exceptedj within the boundaries No 3 subdivision of the Manchester Road District for the purpose of paying interest on a loan of £1686, snch rato to be an annually recurring rate for 26 years and piyable in equal instalments at the Board's office on the first day of April and October in each year. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Wheeler, seconded by Mr Pearce, That the Engineer bo instructed to prepare plans and specifications for the re erection of a bridge over the Mangaone creek, Feilding-Ashurst road, to replace that destroyed by late floods ; and that the chairman take the necessary ■teps to obtain tbe consent of the Borough of Feilding as a contributory body. — Carried. The usual accounts amounting to €514 were passed foe payment and the Board adjourned. _____________________
