Pemberton Notes
fFROM OCtt OWN CORRESPONDENT.] The weather, which had been very dry during last month, has broken, and the past few days have been showery. This will be welcomed by those having young .grass, as the season has been too dry to give the young plants a start, especially on the ridges. On the Queen's Birthday some eight or nine members of the newly-formed Rifle Club met on the range at Curl's clearing for practice, but, unfortun. ately, neither the rifles nor ammunition had arrived. However, two of the members had rifles and a hundred rounds of ammunition, and this was duly blown away. Owing to the new range and untried rifles, no doubt, the scores were not largo at the short ranges, but were improving rapidly at the 500 and 600 yards, when the ammunition gave out. Mr J. J. Bryce, the energetic promoter, has succeeded in getting a capital range, and I have no doubt the club will be a success. The next meeting takes place in the third Saturday in June. On Friday last the chairman of the School 'Committee performed the pleasing duty of distributing the prizes amongst the scholars, the annual examination having taken place last month. About £7 had been collected for the purpose, and the books, which were a hancUocne lot, had been carefully selected by the master. In addition to the prize takers, every child in the school received a present of a book. The following is the prize-list : — Standard V : Florrie McGregor ; Standard IV : Mary Stent, Louis Stent ; Standard III : Nellie McKinnon ; Standard II : Alex. Goodwin, Alex. McKenzie, Ada Clark ; Standard I : Annie McKinnon, Frank Bielski, John Neilson j for Attendance : Arthur Stent, Alex. Goodwin, Ada Clark, Florrie McGregor ; Good Conduct: George McKenzie and Mary Gould. I see by the Star that a large batch of J's.P. have been appointed, but no mention has been of any for Peraber ton. Some time ago a meeting was held and two gentlemen were selected and their names duly forwarded to the Department but they have apparently been over looked. It is to bo hoped that this will be reclined, as some one is urgently required in this matter. A large number of wen and teams have been at work during the past ten days, metalling and repairing the main road. It is unfortunate that the wcrk was not undertaken a month 6oonrr, when value would Lave been received for the money. Some people are still convinced that the Government may be induced to fulfil their promises re the Otara bridge, and a petition lias been largely signed by settlers in this dißtrict urging the erection of the bridge nt Otara in preference to Three Log Whare. The local bodies have gone as far ns they can towards performing their share of the agreement, and it now remains to be seen whether the Government will grant the assistance they pro mised.
