Pohangina Notes.

* {^FKOM OUR OWX CORPESrOMJENT J The heaviest fresh we have had for some years has coursed along onr swift little river this week. It is still bank high, so that travelling is not yet possible, and from the debris scattered along the whole length of the river-bed it is supposed the damage must have been somewhat serious. One horse and a bullock have been seen going down the stream ; one settler lost 80 sheep ; another a slaughterhouse and boilingdown copper ; while microcarpas, turnips, rape, stabs, and gateposts tell of the inroads to gardens. The greatest alteration yet known of is on the river-bed close to the railway embankment. The whole of the groins arc swept away, and the river is now flowing close to the terrace, and has underminod the road down the cutting to such an extent that the whole of the formation in one place has slipped into the river ; foot passengers can just get past by walking into the watertable. The river seems to hayo three channels. It is not jet known in which the bulk of the water will run when the river has run to its usual level, but it is hoped that it will remain in a fairly straight cut it has forced towards the railway. It was noticed that the floating timber all went by this new channel when the river was at its highest. This is very near the place where it was intended to cut a canal through to relieve the pressure on the banks above the railway line. It appears as if the alteration would be very good news to the railway authorities, and it would save them a lot of work.
