WORKMEN'S PROTECTION.

TO TOE KDITOR OF THE *T%H. Sib,— l fail to see why my Auckland confreres tike the step (mentioned by joj in one of last evening's locals) to protect workmen on contract*.* > The Workmen's Lien Act provides,*^, in a clause relating to payments in my "contract, conditions," I also provide, in terms of the said Act, ," that a certain proportion of the contract, money shall be retained, for .thirty-one days, after completion of contract,", daring which time (31 days) any workman may have a claim upon the money so retained or " impounded " ' for wages doc, ami upon the claim being proved correct, then the workmen shall ' be* paid the amount of the claim oat of .the money so " impounded." Ido not think that many of the workmen know of the, power the Workmen's Lien Act gives them. The Act certainly gives them every protection possible from unscrupulous contractors,; arid as my : •• contract conditions " comply with, tbe^ Workmen's Lien Act, I therefore protect workmen as thoroughly as the Aacklond.arphitects do, although in anottier way. in con* elusion, I may say that although very properly protecting workmen, thY Act in question apparently leaves the suppliers of material on a contract qoite unprotected. •' , n •: -- -i I am, etc., , . , .
