In a letter to Mr James Reid, Clujirinan of tho Kiwitea County Council, Mr John Stevens, M.H.R., stated that immediately on the return of the Minister of Lands to Wellington he wired him re the Otara bridge to the effect that a deputation bad been appointed to interview him urging the advisableness of erecting a bridge there, and hoped that he would acquiesce in their view of the matter, and reply, which would obviate the necessity of the deputation proceeding to Wellington. A reply was received by Mr Stevens from the Minister of Lands stating that it was with regret that he could not give a favourable answer, and it would be impossible to have the bridge at the site indicated ; the Three Log Whare site would be of far more benefit to Crown lauds. Mr Stevens therefore advised the deputation to await the return of the Minister of Public Works before going to Wellington, in orcley that the fullest consideration may be giveu t^ th.e^r request.
