Annexation of Samao.
A CLERGYMAN'S OPINION. [Per Press Association]. Berlin, May 1. The Vossiche Zeitung advocates the exchange of German interests in Samoa for Waltisch Bay district, adjoining their possessions in South Africa. London, May 1. Sir E. Grey, in the House of Commons, stated the Government had no reason to suppose any of the powers would at present consent to New Zealand governing feamoa. Sydney, This Day. The Rev. George Brown, a well known missionary, believes nine tenths of the natives in Samoa are in favor of a British Protectorate, and he is inclined to think now the land titles have been settled, that the opposition of the German merchants to British control of the group will not be anything like as stroug as it was a few years ago. The Rev. gentleman does not favor the New Zealand proposal, and considers the only practical plan is for Great Britain to annex the Islands or establish a protectorate and, if thought advisable, New Zealand might be made the executive colony. The Sydney Morning Herald, commenting on the Samoan question, says that while umbrage may bo felt at the seeming want of concert among the colonies, a little time will suffice to show that proper course was taken of wasting no time over an undertaking which New Zealand is incompetent to carry out. The paper, however, eulogised the honorable sentiment which prompted New Zealand to make the offer.
