500 SHOTS IN AS MANY SECONDSTHE WOMEN TAKE A HAND. (Per Mail Steamer ot Auckland.) The American Protective Association (Protestant) and Roman Catholic element came into armed conflict at the polls for the Municipal elections at Kansas on April 2nd More than 500 6hots were j exchanged between the combatants in less than that number of seconds, and when the firing ceased six men were lying dead, dying or injured. While the riot was in progress, some members of the Protective Association telephoned to Armordale and Argentine, strongholds of the order, for reinforcements of 1000 men, and an assur- | ance was given that they would (shortly be lon the waj. The American Protective Association evidently meant business In Kansas and Nebraska the women took a hand at the polls in many places, their votes telling in favor of good government. At La Gunta (Colorado), when the issue was law and order v the gamblers, the latter were snowed nnder by the ballots of the women. The Republicans have made a clean sweep of Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, and Ohio.
