Taxing the Banks.

(Per Press Association.) Wellington, April 24 In November last a case was brought by the Commissioner of Taxes against the Ban* of Australasia to test whether banks were entitled to deduct out of tbeir income interest on deposits paid in London, and Judge Richmond gave judgmeut iv favor of the Baok. In consequence, however, of the retrospective legislation passed last session at the instance of the Tax Department, the parties to tbe suit decided to refer the case back to the Judge, and this morning he reserved bis decision, holding that in the light of fresh legislation on the subject the Bank was liable to a tax.
