The Lord Mayor's Banquet.

[PBH PRESS ASkOCIATION.J London, April 23 At the Lord Mayor's banquet to day, in honor of St. George's Day, upwards of 300 were present, including Cardinal Vaughan, Lord Jersey, Bishop -elwyn, Bishop Camidge (Bathurst), Bishop Webber (Brisbane), Bishop Barry (formerly of Sydney), Mr S. Buxton (Parhamentry Secretary of the Colonial office), Sir Julius Yogel the Agents- General for the various colonies, and a number of leading colonials. Sir George Grey, Sir Henry Loch and the Marquis of Ripon sent messages regretting that they were unable to attend. The Lord Mayor, ia proposing the toast of " Tbe Empire," hoped that the banquet in honor of St George, England's patron saint, would be prepetuated with a view of promoting unity, loyalty, and patriotism of tbe Empire. Lord Kuutsford ! lauded the happy idea of the Lord Mayor in celebrating the anniversary of the Siint'fl birthday. The Conservative*, he declared, were not afraid of the ne.essary extension of the colo nies, »nd were always ready to accept tbe responsibility. He eulogised the work of the Agents- General, and hoped the colonies would never send gentlemen of lower standard, otherwise closer union desired by every statesman might be delayed.
