The Ballance Memorial.

OUTSPOKEN REMARKS BY THE PREMIER. (PEE PEKSS A.BBOCIATIONI Weixingiox, April 17 | A deputation fr<»m the Ballance | Memorial Couauiittee, introduced by | Hon J. Riggr, M.L.0., waited on the Premier to-night and asked him to grant a site in the new Parliamentary grounds on which to erect the Ballance statue. The Hon Mr b'eddon said this / was a matter of some inipotanco requiring very careful consideration. He would consult his colleagues on the subject and inform the deputation of the decision later on. Personally he was of opinion that the question was one for the House of Representatives itself to deal with. Speaking for himself he would be only too pleased to assist the movement, as he recognised that in the Colony those who had sac Tinned themselves in the country's interests were not accorded the respect and veneration he considered they were entitled to. He considered the manner iv which the proposal to erect a memorial to the late Sir Harry Atkinson had been treated was a great blot on the colony. Sir Harry had done yeoman service, nn 1 bis work deserved better recognition at the hands of the country, It was a boutco of great regret to him that nothing bad been done jn Sir Harry Atkiuson's case. In reply to a question by the Hon Mr Seddon, Mr Rigg said the monument to the Hon Mr Ballance would cost about £500. Thero were very few incidental expenses, and almost the whole of the subscriptions would bespent on the memorial, which would be of a very handsome design and worthy both of man and cause.
