The Fielding Star. Published Daily. MONDAY, APRIL 16, 1894. BOROUGH FINANCE.

Now that the long nigh(s of the winter season are upon us the question of lighting the town by either gas or electricity again presents itself. As ] the business parts of Feikling, as well as other portions adjacent, are rapidly becoming covered with new buildings either for stores and shops, or for private residences, thfl necessity for j the improvement of the Borough by lighting it in a manner different to the primitive system which now ob tains, is becoming more urgent. The burgesses are already aware that the Borough Council has in contemplation the erection of suitable Municipal Buildings on a section of land to be presented by the Colonists' Land and Loan Corporation conditionally on the plans of the proposed building meeting the approval of the said Corpora- ion. It is safe to assume that the latter will, for obvious reasons, only be satisfied with a somewhat costly structure. To do this work it necessarily follows that a Joan must he raised, and there can exist no very ; strong arguments against borrowing at the same time in one sum sufficient money to light, drain, and supply the town with a water system. How much money would be required we j are not prepared to state, but that is a matter only to be discussed after a loan scheme has been formulated. What we have to do now is to urge the ratepayers to prepare themselves to accept the inevitable. The members of the present Council have already shown a determination to be progressive, and to keep pace with the advancement of the Borough as regards population, and to follow up the policy they have indicated, the burges ses u.ust do their part by helping to the utmost of their power and ability. The day has gone past for mere idle obstruction, and the time has come, when one and all mast put their shoulders to the wheel, and push for the general good.
