To a Wreath of Flowers on a Grave Stone.
Poor faded flowers ! crumpled, withered, dead ! All fragrance gone , jour lovelj colors fled! Bright were your hura when first you formed tbe wreath Affection formed for ihose who now boneath This cold grey etone lie mouldering in decay. Transient as you — tbe creatnres of a day Fit emblem art thou of the fleeting joy That life briu^s forth for death but to destroy ! But wherefore die you ? Does the offence of Man Entail on yon the obliterating ban ? Notonlr thee ; but all that Earth contains, Tho penalty must pay that Sin obtains Celestial worlds— yea, all Creation vast The wound shall feel ; naught will for ever last, Bat frail as blossoms, submit to the decree While time itself, in time shall cease to be ! Such is the fiat disobedience brought : All Nature dies ! and all tbe works she's wrought. S. Knight.
