Wellington Land Board.

A special meeting of the above was held yesterday. Present— The Commissioner and Messrs T, W. Fisher, A. W. Hogg, M.H.R., and Fred. Pirani, M.H.R. • Immediately after the Board met an adjournment was made till noon to enable the members to interview the Minister of Lands in reference to the Momahaki Block Village Settlement. On the Board resuming, the: following business was disposed of :— MOMOHAKI BLOCK. It was resolved that the Board consider the applications for the Momoliaki Block, after hearing the opinion given by the Solicitor-General to the Minister of Lands as to the legality of the applications. The Commissioner pointed out that Thomas Ellis, hotelkeeper, Waverley, one of the successful applicants, could not legally make the declaration, and it was decided to ask Mr Ellis for an j explanation before approving the application. ■ ~. .• The following applications were approved :— Edmund Burke, section 2a ; U. Schmidt, section 3a ; Samuel D. Johnson, section 7a; A. Anderson, section 8a ; John Barry, section 9a ; Ruddock and Watts, section 10a ; W, Stewart, section 4a; Ellen Hughes, section Da. It was decided to write to Rose Mason, selector of section 11a, drawing special attention to the conditions under which the land is taken up, and asking if she is taking up the land for her own use and benefit. Some discussion arose about the application of Ellen Hughes for section sa, on the ground as to whether a married woman could become a lessee under the Act. It was eventually decided to grant the application After hearing Mr W. B. Edwards, counsel for Mr H. D. Atkinson, the Board refused to rescind the cancellation of interest in the McKenzie Special Settlement. The cancellation of Mr L. Farrelly'B interest in the same settlement was adjourned till next meeting. A long discussion took place on the petition of settlers in the Makuri, Puketoi, and Pahiatua districts for a. reduction of the valuation of holdings. Messrs Hogg and Pirani strongly advocated some steps being taken for the relief of those whose sections were too highly valued, and eventually the matter was adjourned till next meeting. Transfers of small grazing runs in Wainuioru and Rewa districts were granted, as well as application transfer of section 13, Block 7, Apiti, from Joseph Greaves to Henry Hewitt.— Standard.
