(PBft PRESS ASSOCIATION.) jj Thames, April 12. | A serious disturbance has taken place at Pateroa between the Ngatitoi and JNgatitawhake tribes. The former y were removing gravel from a quarry in the Makomako Block when the latter interfered on the ground that they r had a prior right to the pit. During c the korero a well-known chief, Te Monanui, of the Ngatitawhake tribe 0 got his hand badly injured, necessity* * ting the amputation'of one of the fingy era. This so enraged Monanui's followers that eleven natives armed with ® double-barrelled fowlingpieces, and ™ plenty of ammunition, took up a posi- *~ tion in the quarry and emphatically declared they woul£ shoot any of the ■• opposition tribe who removed gravel. 6 After a lengthy parley the police induced both parties to sign a truce 1 pending the ownership of the quarry i being determined. The Ngatitawhake s then discharged their guns, and after y dancing a war dance returned to their pah. Things are quiet to-day but s further trouble is feared.
